Why the Guineapigs?

In 1976 St. George’s Hospital Medical School stared taking pre-clinical years at the Tooting Hospital SW17 site after building a new Medical School. That first year, some lectures were still being done at St. George’s Hospital at Hyde Park Corner and in temporary classrooms on the SW17 building site.

The intake in 1977 was the first year students were taught entirely at the new medical school in Tooting. At the time, our course was experimental and “modern” mixing clinical topics in with the basic science lectured. It became obvious to us students that we were being used as guinea pigs in medical education!
